The Romania Educational Center

The Educational Center in Romania has become one of our longest ongoing projects and has progressed nicely, though still a long way to go! For following updates, we invite you to join the page set up for just this project: Echo Project Romania

We invite you to come check it out, pick up a hammer, and be a part of the beauty in its creation! However if you are unable to travel and still want to contribute, we have listed below some of the projects that are still needing help. To donate visit and PLEASE *specify* which project your contribution is for.

a. Completing the Primary Building: $280,000 USD as follows:

 
Year 2015
$41,000 USD -outside insulation and painting:($17,000 still needed)

Year 2016
$148,000 USD- electrical system, including solar panels:$43,000; plumbing and heating system, including the heating station and heating station building:$30,000; fireproofing system:$10,000; water well and septic tank:$9,000; attic windows:$16,500; outdoor/indoor stairs and Center entrance:$2,500; indoor wall insulation:$17,000; indoor walls, including painting:$15,500; transportation and tools:$4,500

Year 2017
$91,000 USD -ceiling/floor insulation:$13,500; ceiling/floors:$9,000; bathrooms and bathroom appliances:$20,000; kitchen and laundry area, including appliances:$11,000; furniture and decorations:$11,000; fence and courtyard fixing:$22,000; transportation and tools:$4,500.

b. Equipping for the opening: $55,000 USD as follows:
 
Year 2018
$55,000 USD (furniture and decorations:$11,000; educational equipment:$33,000; registration, land, building taxes and fees:$11,000)

c. Buying the land on which the project is being built, plus the neighboring small piece of land: $30,000 as follows:
 
Any year, preferably and starting 2016: $30,000 USD

10 Interesting Facts about Romania

  1. file000396089580The most famous novels, inspired by Romania, are “The Castle in the Carpathians” by Jules Verne, and “Dracula” by Bram Stoker.

  2. Romania is the ninth largest wine producer in the world

  3. Bucharest’s mass transit network is the fourth largest in Europe.

  4. The city of Brasov is home to the largest Gothic church between Vienna, Austria and Istanbul, Turkey.

  5. Peles Castle was the first European castle entirely lit by electrical current. The electricity was produced by the castle’s own plant. The castle’s central heating system, built in 1888, is still functional and in use today.

  6. Europe’s second largest underground glacier, the Scarisoara glacier, is found underneath the Bihor Mountains in Romania. It has a volume of 75,000 cubic meters and has existed for more than 3,500 years.

  7. The American mini-series “Hatfields & McCoys” starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton was filmed in Romania.

  8. The scientist who discovered insulin was Nicolae Paulescu, a Romanian, who originally called it pancreine. Although two Canadian scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923 for their study of insulin, Paulescu’s pioneering work in the field of diabetic medicine was duly accredited.

  9. The Romanian language is 1,700 years old.

  10. It also is Europe’s richest country in gold resources.

Romanian Meatballs (Chiftele)

romanian-meatballsRomanian Meatballs, known as “Chiftele” are one of the most popular Romanian dishes. Learn to make the mother of all meatballs, nothing beats these meatballs!

Ingredients
  • 2 lb ground pork
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 small onions or 1 large one, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 2 potatoes grated
  • 2 eggs ½ cup bread crumbs, I used Panko
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup parsley finely chopped
  • ¼ cup dill finely chopped
  • oil for frying

INSTRUCTIONS

  • In a skillet add the tbsp of oil and saute the onions and garlic until tender. Add the grated potato and cook for a few minutes until it becomes tender. Let this cool.
  • In a large bowl, add the onion/potato mixture, ground pork, eggs and breadcrumbs, salt and pepper, add the chopped parsley and chopped dill and mix well.
  • You can form these into balls, or traditionally they are formed into small patties.
  • Add oil to a large skillet and fry the meatballs on all sides.
  • Serve over spaghetti, or mashed potatoes.
