Volunteer of the Month Team – Donna Kaylor and Maddy Mason

What better way to have some quality mother-daughter time than to spend a week together in Cusco, Peru, volunteering to help bring a brighter future to students with limited educational opportunities? To spark some great bonding time like this, and to give her daughter Maddy a chance to see the world, Donna Kaylor arranged a volunteer vacation for her daughter and herself over Spring Break this year. From start to finish, the two were a dynamic duo, setting out to make a difference in all those around them. In their own personal blog created just for the trip, Donna and Maddy recounted all sorts of adventures, from shopping at Target to prepare for the trip to celebrating Palm Sunday in downtown Cusco to teaching songs about llamas to the students. The pair grew close to the students and coordinator at the Albergue where the children stay, and close to each other, learning what it’s like to face another culture head on and immerse themselves in the newness of it!

This month, we have decided to highlight this awesome Mother-Daughter Team for our May Volunteer of the Month! Together they made necessary preparations for their trip, worked hard and diligently at the Albergue, and shared about their experience with people in their lives and online communities, and together we would like to recognize them for their dedication and commitment to improving lives cross-culturally! Vote for the Maddy and Donna team as May Volunteer of the Month by visiting Globe Aware’s Facebook page  and LIKING, SHARING, or COMMENTING on the photo of the two of them posted at the top of the page.

Check out Donna and Maddy’s blog for yourself!

Melina

Melina is native of Peru who has a degree in Hospitality Management and Business. When Melina was a teenager, she left home with just $70 to travel and learn English. Coming from a poor family, her parents could not afford to pay for her studies, so she made the decision to study with native speakers in Cusco and work in tourism, starting as a housekeeper. Melina quickly moved up and became the receptionist of a hotel, and then several weeks later, she was offered work as travel agent. Melina eventually moved back to Lima to complete her last year of college.

Melina loves to travel and interact with different people from many cultures and communities. She likes parties and of dancing to all kind of music. Melina enjoys cooking Peruvian food and learning about other cuisines.

Melina adopted her cousin’s daughter, who had been living in bad conditions, was not going to school and was taking care of her brother of four months. Melina's neice Yeraldine is now going to school and is getting great grades in school.

Laura T.

lauratiddleLaura

Born and raised in the great state of New Jersey, I have had a people-passion my whole life. I graduated from Rutgers University (GO RU!!) with highest honors in both of my majors-- psychology and religion. I think these areas are a fair reflection of my earnest desire to better understand the people living with me in our world. Although I plan on pursuing my doctorate in clinical psychology, it is my deep love for understanding the cultures and beliefs of other people that led me to Globe Aware.

While still in high school, I had the opportunity to travel all over Europe with a national choir group; an experience meant to unite us cross-culturally through the international medium of music. It was here that I caught the "travel bug" and have been something of a gypsy ever since.
Some recent interetsing experiences I have had included spending the better part of the summer and fall of 2007 sailing in Penobscot Bay, Maine as a volunteer on the wooden boat Grace Bailey. In the middle of November, I joined the crew of the Appledore and headed south to Key West. The experience of traveling over 2100 miles in the North Atlantic, on a wooden boat, IN THE WINTER!, certainly taught me a thing or two about both independence and working as a member of a well-organized team.

I have been volunteering in community capacities for most of my life and love the humble joy it provides. I hope to share some of that joy with the volunteers I meet and spread it to the community in which we are working. My greatest hope for the time I spend with Globe Aware is to have the volunteers leave with fond memories of their host country, and give the hosts a refreshing view of Americans. It is these feelings of goodwill that allow the potential for real growth and understanding for all of us. I am excited to be part of the Globe Aware team and can hardly wait to meet new volunteers!!

Ainsworth

jamaica coordinatorAinsworth

I grew up in a small district call Rock Spring in the parish of Trelawny. I attended Spring Garden Primary and graduated from Albert Town High School. After leaving high school, I started working for a local nonprofit environmental Agency which runs a number of projects to help improve and sustain the environment. I am very excited about working with Globe Aware. I have enjoyed getting to know visitors to my community, and now I am pleased to be able to interact with volunteers and get to know more about their culture. Some of my first volunteers refer to me as their big brother, because I took such good care of them. My mother has worked for the primary school here for many years, and I love seeing the progress that the volunteers make in our community. When I am not working I spend my time hanging out with friends, playing football or going to parties.

Federico

fredericoFederico

Hola, my name is Federico. I was born in the north of Argentina in small town named San Miguel de Tucuman. I grew up in Tucson, Arizona where I received my B.S. in Mathematics; I am currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Education through the Language, Reading, and Culture department at the University of Arizona. I've traveled through Europe, South America and in the Pacific. I spent the past year volunteer teaching in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. I lived in Aerok, Ailinglaplap on a 6-mile long island with no running water, telephone or supermarket. Along with teaching English through science, history and math lessons I developed a community-wide gardening project to address the lack of fruits and vegetables in the Marshallese diet. This experience gave me a new perspective on necessities. I experienced the joys and struggles of living without a hectic schedule, but with very limited resources. My other interests include Ultimate Frisbee, swimming, rock-climbing, cycling, hiking, gardening, playing various musical instruments, and creating all forms of art. I am passionate about the rights and preservation of indigenous peoples language, culture, and land, and am an activist for educational rights globally. Sustainable Agricultural development, free trade and global conflict resolution are also of significant interest to me. But most of all I enjoy finding peace and purpose in each moment, especially surrounded by nature. I hope I can help make the Globe Aware experience a rewarding and unforgettable adventure for you.
