Mel

I have been working with a local Environmental Agency for over two years, and the experience has me well prepared to work with
and lead Globe Aware Volunteers in Jamaica.  Through the organization we have been working with community members towards environmental
conservation and community development.  We have worked with quite a few US Peace Corps Volunteers. My experience working alongside American
volunteers has given me an understanding of the challenges Americans may face volunteering in rural Jamaica and has provided me with great
hands-on experience for working with Globe Aware Volunteers serving in Jamaica.

I'm twenty-something, born and raised in Joe Hut, Trelawny, a 20 minute drive from the community Jamaica's Globe Aware Volunteers will be
working in.  I am also continuing higher education toward a future career in education.

Though I am now an American citizen, I was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico in a small city named “Valles.” The surrounding area is called “La Huasteca” and is known for its verdant life, it’s green mountains, and its stiff traditions. I travel frequently to Mexico.

I would say the best thing about Mexico is how natural it is. I love the mountains, the valleys, and the incredible amount of rivers. Life seems just so open there. Most people spend don’t their time cooped up in their houses, but out, visiting neighbors, walking the plazas, and even just sitting on their front porches, “shooting the breeze.” This absolutely enchants me. I feel blessed to have been brought up in a bilingual environment.

I am devoted to learning about other cultures, such as that of Mexico. So it’s a good fit for me to work with Globe Aware. I think the tourist view of a country is fine, but the reality is where the real beauty, and the real challenges lie. Knowing the itty-bitty nuances.

My life is based now in Dallas, Texas. I was essentially raised and educated there. While working with Globe Aware, I am also working toward a degree in International Business, with an emphasis on trade relations. I have worked in various roles at Globe Aware, as a bookkeeper, translator and all around communicator. And I’m looking forward to working with all my volunteers abroad!

As a returned Peace Corps volunteer, geography nerd, and travel junkie, I am very excited to work with Globe Aware! I always look forward to making new friends, both in Globe Aware volunteers, as well as local community members. I am a native of Dallas, TX and currently working with Globe Aware to develop new programs and complete administrative projects. I have an undergraduate degree in geography, Spanish, and Latin American studies from the University of Texas at Austin (and I am a huge Longhorns fan!) I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica, and I have a Master’s degree in Applied Geography. I studied abroad in Spain, and have traveled extensively throughout Europe. I also took an around-the-world trip last year, and visited countries such as Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.

My experience as an environmental outreach volunteer in Jamaica taught me the importance of volunteering, and the value of cultural immersion. I have maintained ties with Jamaica and in 2005 I returned to the island to undertake a study of community water systems in a rural area. I am interested in water rights and policy, and I find the different ways that people obtain water throughout the world fascinating when contrasted to the convenience of an in-home tap. Globe Aware brings the extremely valuable combination of manpower, materials, and a desire to help out to needy communities to create tangible improvements for communities, and an increased awareness of different cultures for everyone involved.
