Helio

helio photo1I was born and raised in Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, in Brazil. I also went to college there, studying LAW. I got my J.D. in 1996 and practiced Law for two years. In 1998 I moved to New York City to start a graduate course. Initially I thought of a Master in Law, but because I could not afford such a course, I ended-up going for an MBA in financial accounting. I lived in New York from 1996 to 2002 and this experience made me fluent in English, though it didn’t do so much for my soul. In 2002, almost a year from the 09/11 attacks, I decided to move back to my home country and to start a new life near my siblings. After my return to Brazil, I was hired by a Jamaican Hotel Chain, called SuperClubs, where I was an assistant controller. The Globe Aware experience for me started totally by accident. I was returning from a trip to Cuba and at the airport, while trying to check-in, I met a wonderful person from Globe Aware. She told me that GA was trying to run a program in Brazil and I said I would love to help them establishing such a program. So she did and I became the Brazil program coordinator. I look forward to seeing you all in beautiful and festive Brazil.

Gregory

Photo VolGregI was born and raised in Dallas. Growing up, I saw it as my duty to keep my parents on their toes. In addition to engaging in adventure sports at an early age, I was dyslexic, with Attention Deficit Disorder; there were times I wondered if I’d ever get through school. My parents may have forced my priorities a bit when I was younger, but with their insistence – er, encouragement, I became an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts (my final project had to do with reforestation of inter-city parks). I went to college at SMU in Dallas, majored in Communications, then became a Microsoft Certified Engineer (though I was perhaps more dubiously visible as the official SMU Peruna mascot). Now I’m a thirty-something guy, working on my M.B.A. with an emphasis on Information Assurance and Personal Finance. After graduation, I worked for a number of medical software companies in an IT capacity. I have also volunteered with autistic children in the Dallas Public School System, and helped out with various groups, such as Sustainable Dallas, and donated web developing services to a variety of nonprofit organizations. Sports in school: triathlon and competitive swimming (have official lifesaving certification, but let’s not test that!). I also really enjoyed one summer spent as a raft guide in Colorado. I am now also a landlord of sorts with a few rental properties. I enjoy hands on projects, and have enjoyed refinishing floors, putting in new fixtures, etc, and being a landlord gives me plenty to do in this regard. I’ve traveled extensively in New Zealand, Suriname (Dutch Guyana), Mexico, Germany, among other places, and conducted exploratory missions with volunteers in South America, including to Costa Rica, where we researched available projects, needs, and resources; (I have also worked with the Urban Oasis project against urbanization with Globe Aware). In addition, I organize yearly adventure ski programs in Colorado where I teach (without monetary compensation) people how to ski. At various times, I’ve also made Seattle, Houston, and Colorado my home. Hobbies have included construction work and woodworking projects (from heavy duty to making items such as an amateur electric guitar). I particularly enjoy people to people programs that expand people’s minds. For example, I founded a Dining Club to bring people together to sample new cuisines. I love kids, dogs, people, and the outdoors. My girlfriend lives in College Station at the moment, and is on her way to being a veterinarian; she’s the greatest! I love the concept of Globe Aware, particularly the idea of “Having Fun and Helping People.” I got involved via one of the founders in February 2002 and I just can’t wait to meet each and every one of you! GO TEAM!

Sarah

Photo VolSarah“A born-and-bred farm girl from Yorkshire, England, I am a great lover of the outdoors - my hobbies including competing at equestrian events, snow boarding and walking. I have recently graduated from Durham University, England, where I was studying French, Spanish and Italian. This has allowed me, for the past few years, to make the most of my studies and travel, experiencing new cultures whilst practicing my languages. Equally, at university I have embraced foreign cultures, ensuring that foreign students enjoy their time in England and are fully involved in student life. In my short lifetime, I’ve been lucky enough to backpack around Western Europe, chalet maid in the Swiss Alps, barmaid in the Balearics, ski instruct in France, au-pair in Greece and Paris, study in Italy and be a volunteer teacher in Costa Rica. This last experience is of most importance here, as this is how I initially became involved with Globe Aware. Teaching for three months in the remote rainforest village where GA conducts one of its programs was an enormous education for me, about myself, but equally about Tican life. The warmth of these people is overwhelming, and I wanted to help them overcome their difficulties in keeping this united group together by establishing a way, through sustainable development, to avoid the younger members of the community having to leave to work in the city. By a stroke of luck, paths crossed with Globe Aware, and El Sur has benefited immensely as a result of their involvement. After my Costa Rican experience, I’m hoping to work in the volunteer sector as a career, something I am truly inspired by, so I hope I can give back as much as I have already received. I always look forward to meeting similarly motivated people, or people who will are ready to become inspired by volunteering with Globe Aware. It is a privilege to share what I have learnt from volunteering in Latin America, and to help volunteers go away having had an enjoyable and educational experience, taking with them wonderful memories, but also a deeper understanding of a new culture - of its richness as well as of the problems its poverty can lead to.”

Michael

Photo VolMicheal“I was born and raised in the cultural center of the universe, Garland, TX, a suburb of Dallas. I went to college at SMU in Dallas, studying English, Spanish and Political Science. Finally, I left, and spent my junior year studying in London and traveled to France, Spain, Italy, and Greece. After graduation, I worked and traveled for a company that teaches children with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. In 1999 I moved to Bloomington, Indiana to start my Ph.D. in English. I have taken full advantage of the flexibility of graduate school and have taken a couple of leaves of absence to travel. I spent several months in Mexico in 2001, and last year I was in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Belize for most of the year. Over the summer I led a group of 10 17 and 18 year olds around Guatemala for 6 weeks, walking in the jungle, climbing mountains, living and working with local families and hurtling along highly questionable roads in the back of highly questionable pick-up trucks. The GlobeAware experience is much more regulated to ensure against such questionable situations. Now I am back in Bloomington reading for my qualifying exams and teaching. I am teaching a reading and writing class for freshmen that I designed called "Questions of Travel: The Modern Global Tourist." We read travelers' tales, look at pop culture representations of tourists and have good conversations about travel and the encounters it makes possible. My own work is on nineteenth century travel culture and its relationship to visual culture (especially photography and early cinema). I'm particularly interested in travel narratives of Central and South America from the period. So, when I'm not traveling, I'm thinking about it.“

Sharlene

SharleneHi there! I was born in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, where I grew up with my older sister, Arlene, and my parents who moved to the US from Punjab, India after an arranged marriage there. I love having a mix of both Indian and 'American ' culture, and being able to relate to aspects of both cultures when I travel. The last time I was in India was for my cousin's wedding. My family lives in a small village, so the wedding was very traditional. For the first ceremony, all the streets in the village were closed, and my cousin was on a beautiful white horse decorated in red and orange carnations. The entire party on his side followed behind him as his horse led us to the temple. When we reached the temple, I got to feed the horse first since I was the youngest cousin, and than we all went over to the bride's parents' house for a pre-wedding reception where the bride's friends performed classical Indian dances. When we got back from our trip, I begged my mom to sign me up for Indian dance classes, they were so much fun! A good friend of mine in high school was an exchange student from Lisbon, and she invited me to visit her in Portugal the summer after we graduated. I took my sister along and we ended up backpacking around Western Europe for two months. I fell in love with Sevilla, Spain and wanted to learn Spanish better so that I could immerse myself fully in the culture. I began college at the University of Michigan (go blue!) when we returned from our backpacking trip, and decided to major in Spanish and Economics. Traveling in the Dominican Republic, I became fluent in Spanish mostly through interviewing women in villages of the Jarabacoa Mountains about health and nutrition. This is where my interest in Public Health began and I began to open my eyes to all the health disparities there are in the world. I worked with Animadoras ' local health workers ' in the villages and we went door to door giving vaccinations to the kids and offering health advice to their mothers. It was an empowering experience, and the following summer I went to Ecuador to volunteer at a government health clinic. While I wasn't volunteering or learning about health issues, I was dancing! I learned the basics of merengue and salsa in the Dominican Republic, and got to practice my moves with my host family in Ecuador! I love dancing and it has opened up a world of possibilities for interacting with people when I travel. I spent six months in Sevilla, Spain, where I met an awesome group of volunteers who walked around the city on weekday nights to offer café con leche and conversation and company to the homeless people there. I joined up with them and got to go on retreats with their volunteer group all around Spain, which was a great cheap way to travel and learn about Spanish culture. When I graduated from Michigan, I moved to Santa Cruz, CA and worked at a health clinic in Salinas, the 'Lettuce Capital of the World. ' Besides learning how to make great salads, I joined a Salsa Rueda (Cuban salsa) dance team, took a ceramics class, and tried out surfing! I also volunteered as a Spanish-English translator at a free clinic, and became really interested in health care policy and immigration. Now, I'm studying to get my Masters in international health policy at Harvard, and enjoying the dance scene in Boston. I spent the month of January in Santiago de Chile studying health reform, hanging out with Chilean medical students, dancing at Salsatecas, and eating great seafood! The combination was too perfect! Right now I'm working on our school's International Night Cultural Show which will feature food, music and dancing from around the world! I love trying out new foods, people watching, and most of all, traveling and making friends from all different backgrounds!! I have had such wonderful experiences traveling and volunteering abroad, and I am very excited about facilitating other peoples' experiences as a volunteer coordinator with Globe Aware.

Caesar

ceasarI am from Dallas, Texas and am 25 years old. Currently I work as an interpreter at Children's Medical Center of Dallas. I interpret for Spanish speaking families. It is really a joy meeting so many beautiful children. I get to go to all different departments of the hospital, learning about different treatments and procedures. It can also be a sad experience as many children unfortunately pass away. In July I will begin medical school in San Antonio, Texas. I would like to work in field of international public health in the developing nations of Africa, Latin America, and Asia. I love to travel to new countries, learning about their people and land. Recently I finished a Masters in Public Health from Texas A&M University. As part of this degree I did public health internships in Mexico and Dominican Republic. Previously as an undergraduate in Biomedical Science also a Texas A&M, I did an internship in Nicaragua. I have also been to El Salvador for 10 days. I'm leading Globe Aware Programs in Peru and Costa Rica. My interests are in traveling, reading, and dancing Salsa and Meringue.

Kelvin

Somphone Keomany, "Kelvin"

Somphone Keomany, also known as "Kelvin," has been working with Globe Aware since 2006. He became our lead coordinator in the spring of 2008. Kelvin is extremely well connected in the Luang Prabang area, and has no shortage of project opportunities for volunteers. He is extremely gracious, and loves helping visitors get to know Laos better. In his spare time, Kelvin offers mountain bike tours around Laos, and he also drives a tuk-tuk. He has a wife and a 4 year-old son named Kelvin.

"The people in Lao are very kind, polite and generous. I love how they are very social and in the villages ther eis much socializing and eating together. They are a real community in every sense of the word." - Diane Favia, February 2012

I cannot speak more highly of the respect I have for Kelvin. He was prompt, educational and articulate. He has such a gift with the children and was of great assistance helping me assess the children's competence of English prior to leaving me in a classroom of smiley faces and eagerness. Thank you to everyone at Globe Aware for being responsible for changing people's lives for the better and I love your offsetting of carbon emission charter." - Margaret Wishart, October 2010

Rocio

Rocio

¡Hola! My name is Rocio and I was born and grew up in Cusco, Peru and I currently live in San Sebastian, Cusco, with the kids of the Albergue. I’m the youngest of 2 brothers and one sister. Since 8 years ago I have been living in the Albergue where I help working with kids and also serve time in the office because I also have skills as a secretary, accountant and information specialist. I speak Spanish as my first language, Quechua (I learned when I was a child with my grandmother, but now I practice with the kids of the Albergue) and English (I learned 3 years ago studying in a language center). I have worked in a High School teaching English where my students speak more Quechua than Spanish. It is interesting and gratifying work helping kids that need so much. I enjoy listening to different kinds of music, I love dances, and I enjoy helping our special community kids. I’m waiting for you in the Albergue!

"Rocio made this trip so special. You can see how much the children adore her and she loves the,. She went out of her way to show us not onlyl the sites, but to giveus a glimpse into the culture.
