As a returned Peace Corps volunteer, geography nerd, and travel junkie, I am very excited to work with Globe Aware! I always look forward to making new friends, both in Globe Aware volunteers, as well as local community members. I am a native of Dallas, TX and currently working with Globe Aware to develop new programs and complete administrative projects. I have an undergraduate degree in geography, Spanish, and Latin American studies from the University of Texas at Austin (and I am a huge Longhorns fan!) I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica, and I have a Master’s degree in Applied Geography. I studied abroad in Spain, and have traveled extensively throughout Europe. I also took an around-the-world trip last year, and visited countries such as Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.
My experience as an environmental outreach volunteer in Jamaica taught me the importance of volunteering, and the value of cultural immersion. I have maintained ties with Jamaica and in 2005 I returned to the island to undertake a study of community water systems in a rural area. I am interested in water rights and policy, and I find the different ways that people obtain water throughout the world fascinating when contrasted to the convenience of an in-home tap. Globe Aware brings the extremely valuable combination of manpower, materials, and a desire to help out to needy communities to create tangible improvements for communities, and an increased awareness of different cultures for everyone involved.
