Project Spotlight:
Constructing Lorena Stoves in Peru

IMG_0280 2Our volunteers have the unique opportunity to visit the Andean villages surrounding Cusco, Peru to help build a Lorena Stove for a family in need.

What is a Lorena Stove?

  • A stove to replace open fires
  • Constructed of adobe (mud, straw, water)

Why Lorena Stoves?

  • To decrease common diseases from smoke (respiratory infections, eye infections, asthma)
  • To increase fuel efficiency (saves time working, and uses less trees in and around the village)

“We really appreciated the opportunity to visit Mayumbamba and build a stove. It was a great opportunity to get a taste of village life.” – Peru Volunteer, March 2017

“It was amazing to visit the communities away from the city and see how people live and do even a small project [build stove] that was warmly appreciated by the recipients” – Marc Staley, October 2014

Come meet the people, mix some mud, and make an impact with us in Cusco, Peru!

Africa was such an amazing experience

d2abbcef2b0a0010d222b474b97c2e7c_XL“Africa was such an amazing experience. The village that we worked at was wonderful. The people were so friendly and welcoming. We got to cook with the villagers, learn about their culture, teach the students and interact with everyone. The work was hard work but worth it. Although it was hot and challenging, it was so exciting seeing how much the villagers appreciated the work that we did in their village.

We worked in the village Monday through Friday and built a washroom for them. We learned how to fetch water on our heads, which was very interesting. It was amazing to see how much women and children could carry on their heads! We taught the children some of the games that we play over in the U.S. and it was fun to watch them try and learn and then play together with them. I loved how happy the kids always are. One day I asked a little boy if he was always happy.. He replied to me, 'Yes we are always happy. There is no reason ever not to be.' That brought tears to my eyes. These adults and kids are just happy with the little that they have. They were also so joyful when the washroom was finished. That, in turn, made us all so happy.

Saturday we got to explore a little. We went to the monkey sanctuary and got to feed the monkeys. Then we went on a 45 minute hike up a to a beautiful waterfall and all got to swim. Sunday we went to the village and said our goodbyes. They all sand and danced for us and prayed for us. It was such an emotional goodbye.

Ghana is a beautiful country. I am so blessed to have been able to experience Africa. It was such an incredible experience to volunteer like we did and made me want to go volunteer wherever possible! I encourage anyone to do this. It's so worth it! Africa taught me so much, especially to be more grateful. I will never forget this experience. Thank you Globe Aware and all the volunteers!

Spinach and Pea Fried Rice (adapted from Naturally Ella)

Pea-Fried-Rice-1June 5th is WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY and every small act counts. Re-use some leftover food (rice), and try to eat local, seasonal produce (peas). This recipe might help you get started:

Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons peanut oil, divided
  • 1/2 bunch scallions, including some of the green stalks, diced
  • 1 cup fresh shelled peas
  • 2 cups cooked brown rice
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon mirin
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded spinach
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Directions
  1. In a large skillet set over low heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Stir in diced scallions and peas, cooking until warm, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in brown rice, soy sauce, rice vinegar and mirin, cooking for 2 to 3 more minutes to fry the rice. Add the shredded spinach, stirring and cooking until spinach starts to wilt slightly.
  2. Create a large well in the center of the rice; add remaining tablespoon of oil. Whisk eggs in a bowl, then pour them into the well. Cook the eggs, stirring occasionally, until set, 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in sesame seeds and black pepper. Serve hot
