The Trip You’ll Never Stop Talking About

Creating a lasting impact on sustainability!

"The Mayans had a deep understanding of the medicinal value of plants and how to grow them in a sustainable cycle." - Volunteer Dan Fiacco

Our volunteers began their week in Guatemala by planting yucca on a Mayan farm, immersing themselves in traditional, eco-friendly farming practices. Throughout the week, they took part in excavating a Mayan Chultun, harvesting turmeric, and revitalizing a banana plantation—hands-on efforts that support both the land and local communities.

Another meaningful task they completed was laying a cement floor for a family in need. The beneficiary was a father who had recently lost his son, and providing a safe, comfortable environment was the least we could do to support him.

Beyond the rewarding work, our volunteers formed lasting friendships within the community, sharing stories and laughter along the way. They also had the chance to unwind in Guatemala’s breathtaking landscapes, enjoying moments of peace and reflection amid nature’s beauty.

“We installed a cement floor and worked with sustainable agricultural projects and a children's center. It was balanced that every other day was a fun, optional restful activity day. We got to meet several community members and other volunteers and were able to exchange information for future connections. Our coordinator was super involved and took a lot of time with us every day to explain everything and answer any questions.” - Volunteer Nan Fiacco

Building a Home a Day in Kenya!

Our volunteers, alongside the local community, worked tirelessly to build a brand new home each day. Many families in rural Kenya live in unsafe conditions, facing poor roofing, exposure to harsh weather, health risks from inadequate sanitation, overcrowding, and a lack of privacy.

Safe and stable housing is vital to the well-being of these families. A secure home not only provides protection from the elements but also reduces health risks and offers a foundation for a better quality of life. It fosters dignity, stability, and hope for the future. By coming together to build these homes, volunteers, and locals aren’t just constructing shelters, they’re creating safe spaces where families can flourish, children can learn, and communities can grow stronger. It was truly a remarkable collaborative effort!

Join us in June to help with our new vocational school project!

Globe Aware volunteers funded the construction of a building a few years ago, and it is now being transformed into a vocational school. The facility will include a tailoring class block, a library, and offices for the principal, secretary, and staff. We are actively monitoring the progress and ongoing modifications.

The construction, carried out in collaboration with the community, is soon to be completed, with student recruitment beginning this month. Coordinator Imedi has shared a few photos of the ongoing construction process. We are excited to welcome volunteers to make a difference and share their skills at the new vocational school, including one arriving in June!

Your Path to Adventure Starts...with your first volunteer vacation!

Here are five unique travel tips to help you get ready for your first (or next) Globe Aware volunteer vacation!

  1. Email Yourself Important Documents: Take photos or scan your passport, visa, travel insurance, and any important reservations, then email them to yourself. This way, even if you lose your phone or paperwork, you can access them from anywhere.
  2. Learn “Help” & “Thank You” in the Local Language: Knowing just a few key phrases can go a long way in making connections and navigating challenges.
  3. Use Google Maps Offline: Before leaving your hotel, download offline maps of the area you're exploring. This will help you find your way even if you don’t have Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  4. Pack a Small 'First Day' Kit: Put together a mini kit with essentials like a power adapter, a bit of local currency, snacks, and a printed itinerary. That way, if you're tired after a long flight, you have what you need without having to scramble on arrival.
  5. Take a Photo of Your Luggage Before Checking It In: If your luggage gets lost, having a photo makes it much easier to describe to airline staff. Bonus tip: Tie a colorful ribbon or tag to your bag for easy spotting on the carousel.
